Additional Old Magic Templates. (0.3.8)

Postby Pichoro on Sun Oct 07, 2007 12:19 pm

This is now a thread for storing non-source or large-installer only Old Style Magic templates for 0.3.8.

Included are Old Style Tokens, Old Style Flips, Old Style Textless, Old Style Promo, and Old Style Artbackground.

The Old Style Textless and Promo Frames are by FPM and the Old Style Flip frames are Buttock1234. Buttock1234 also created the Old Style Flip template, and did extensive work on the Old Style Textless and Old Style Promo templates.

These templates now utilize optional foil gradients - get some here.

To make sword or shield symbols in the p/t of portal styles, type "P" or "T".

Ehh.... I hope you don't mind me fixing the name, casting cost, artist, and all that junk in the style file, to match the style file for magic-old I posted. Same with magic-old-promo.

Everything but the casting cost is fine. Please don't change that; its part of an ongoing experiment by me.

Otherwise, if you fix fields and post the revised version, I'll happily change to it.

Not necessarily. The name is too big; the P/T, Copyright, and artist fields are too far up and to the left, and the artist is the wrong font and size (Should be MPlantin rather than Matrix).

I'll leave the scripts in the copyright/artist alone, I wasn't gonna fiddle around with those. It's just that their positions are slightly wrong.

I'll post my version once I'm finished, and we can compare I guess.

You misunderstood me. I meant its fine to change everything but the casting cost. Please leave the casting cost alone; mess with everything else as you will.

I guess I should have been more clear.

Ah. Sorry about that. Don't mind me, it's 2:00 in the morning up here... I left the casting cost alone then, even though it's a bit small....

Is the code to move the artist/legal text essential? Because I don't think it's really needed. I'd probably just be easier to find a way to shrink the P/T as it overflows. Maybe using "max stretch" or something.

The casting cost may be small, but I'm not done with it. I'm currently playing with all new, old, planeshifted, and classicshifted casting costs.

I wasn't fond of the scripts to move the artist/copyright lines. But other answers are sloppy.

Originally, I just had it centered, but that meant I had to either restrict the size of those fields to prevent overflow, or deal with the fact that it will go way off center. I decided to cope by having it centered, but also moving the field as it is used.

Perhaps a better idea is to just not ever allow it to go into the space taken up by the rarity symbol or the p/t? And then just center it? I dunno.

What do you think of the font color selection for the promo template?

I don't really see what's currently wrong with the mana costs, but that's your prerogative I guess.

I removed those for now.

I think a better idea would just be to add "max stretch" to the P/T, like the name and type lines. That way, things like 2+*/2+* will fit without screwing up the positioning of the rest of the card.

Haven't checked Promo out yet, actually. I'll get back to you on that, but I do know I want to fix the same things I did in this file with it.

The problem with casting costs is that hybrid mana symbols should be seated lower than non-hybrids. They're not in the last release of the program. They sort of are in my release of this template, and in the source, but more work is needed to get them truly right.

I, personally, don't think it's that big of a problem; it looks barely noticable to me.

But, again, I haven't had a chance to check out the promo-style yet. I apologize, but the combination of overtiredness, and homework taking up most of my time, I haven't had a lot of time to download or test things.

Don't feel bad; as far as I'm aware of, neither do any of the official developers. Things are very calm lately.

Re: Old Style Promo Template

I guess I'll work on fixing the fields of the promo template then.

I'll post back the zip in a bit.

EDIT: Style file for promos are up. As per Pichoro's previous request for Promo and Textless, mana costs have been left alone. Also, just curious, but shouldn't the frames be JPG's, rather than PNG's, at least to match the standard Old Style?

I've updated all the templates in this thread with optional foil gradients.

Also, added two more varities - magic-old-planeswalker, and magic-old-portal.

Magic-old-planeswalker is nothing special - it just adds loyalty stuff to the old style frames. Its mostly to fill the hole, for those who want to use old style frames but also have planeswalkers.

Magic-old-portal is magic-old with some tweaks, including separate rules and flavor text boxes, the divider line, and a symbol-font for the p/t to get sword/shield icons. They are accessible by typing "[P]" or "[T]".
