Cartoon style

Postby Idle Muse on Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:05 pm

I was bored tonight so I decided to make a template. Turned out it took longer than I expected, since i'm posting here at about 4am local time. It's kind of a fun less, serious template, without many special features like coloured lands or whatnot, but still some tricky interesting stuff.

Major features:
- A styling option for just fulltext, or art as well.
- Lovely big manacost (thanks to Pichoro for creating the mana symbols - download the Bubble mana font from the mana font thread if you haven't got it already.)
- An auxilliary field at the bottom. I've attached it to the VS symbol font at the moment, because it provides a nice set of sort of abstract symbols. You can use it for affiliations if you want, or basically anything else that takes your fancy in the realm of extra rules for magic.

Things I don't like, but am too tired to fix:
- Wasted border space, especially round the top area, and in the bottom of the textbox if you don't use the aux field.
- Boring pt.
- Only a smallish image if you use that option.
- No choosable mana fonts; gonna add a package choice to the auxillary box to allow ANY symbol font at some point.

Things to do while installing:
- Unzip to the data directory.
- Copy font to fonts directory.
- Ensure you have magic bubble mana font and vs 'new' symbol font.

OK, have fun and enjoy! Feedback appreciated.

Sorry, too tired to do an example image right now.

EDIT: OK, released a version that has the option to change to the magic textures if you like. No universal symbol font switcher though, as there seem to be compatibility issues when switching between fonts that don't have the same code-set.

EDIT: The problem with the universal symbol-font switcher was to do with a bad symbol font I had, not with the coding I did. So here's a working version with that functionality.

That is an interesting little template, Lordpenguin. I actually kinda like it. I'm glad to see my bubble mana font utilized as well.

Well, I'm off to go put a download link for this template on the main download page.

OK, now I'm more awake, I've had an extra-cool idea. As you can easily see if you open up the style folder, like many of my templates, this one is made in layer in such a way that the base texture is just a simple image that can be changed without having to fuss with text boxes. Now, in the next version, there will be an option to switch from those cheap-and-cheerful textures to the normal magic-new textures! I haven't tried it yet to see what they look like, but should be good.

EDIT: Updated front post with magic-textures-optional version.

I was curious what sort of problem you ran into when putting in your "universal font switcher". I put in what I think is the same thing, and didn't run into any obvious problems. Now, there was of course, some odd behavior when switching, from say, hecatomb-amplifier-light-yellow (a font for emulating the name font used for Hecatomb cards) to magic-mana-small. But there wasn't any crashing or error messages. Just what you would expect with letters being forced into mana circles.

I used a match of "*.mse-symbol-font".

So did I, but I think the problem was actually in one of the vs symbol fonts :P

I'll try it again now.

EDIT: This is the error rmessage I get:
File not found: 'activate.png' in package vs-standard-official.mse-symbol-font etc.

EDIT: Yeah, I just put a copy of the activate.png into the right folder, and fixed it.
Need to work on the symbols sizes though; magic mana symbols turn out too small.
Turns out I was using the wrong one; there are FAR too many symbol fonts just called 'normal'.

Updated download.

Agreed that there are too many mana fonts titled "normal". And too many, in general, atleast to be viewed in the list. lol
